John Grott Obituary

John Francis Grott, 88, of Wanatah, passed away Monday, March 4, 2019 at home. He was born May 3, 1930 in Michigan City to Lawrence and Cecelia (Timm) Grott. On March 26, 1951 he married Mary Louise McKellar who passed away February 23, 2019. John is survived by his children Mark (Barbara) Grott of Hanna, Kathy Grott of Wanatah; four grandchildren Lindsey Grott (Jeff) Sample , Jonathan (Kelly) Grott, Sr., Nick (Katie) Grott and Michelle Larson; seven great-grandchildren Kyle, Kaleb, Meagan, Jonathan Jr., Gracie, Justin and Logan. His brothers and sisters Frances Muller, Norman Grott, Suzanne Bishop, Richard Grott and his basset hound Lucy also survive him. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his son John E. Grott, his parents and his two brothers Albert Grott and Lawrence Grott, Jr. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, the Wanatah Lions Club from 1966-2019 for which he was a life member, a member of the United States Marine Corps. from 1951-1953, the Antique Tractor Club, the Mitchell and Shoppel Bowling Team, served on the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Dept., the Sacred Heart Parish Council and Parish Hall Building Committee, the REMC Board of Directors from 1975-1977 and then 1986-2007, helped with Meals on Wheels, and volunteered his time to go on the Lions Club 25A Eyeglass Mission from 2005-2007. He also volunteered in the Swine Barn at the LaPorte County Fair. John worked at Allis Chalmers, Mitchell and
Shoppel and raised hogs on the family farm. A memorial mass will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 9th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah. Rev. Richard Kozak will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the time of mass at the church with Lions Club Memorial Services at 9:30 AM. Burial will be private at Patton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Toys for Tots, the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
