Obituary

Rita C. Berndt, 75, of LaPorte, passed away on January 20, 2023, at her home surrounded by family.  She was born on May 12, 1947, in Gary, Indiana, to John C. and Sarah E. (Roemer) Ryan.  On September 10, 1966, in Gary, Indiana, she married Dennis L. Berndt.  Rita worked for most of her life as a hostess in the restaurant industry.  She enjoyed spending her time attending Purdue games with Denny, attending estate sales, playing scrabble, and was also an animal lover.  Rita is survived by her daughters Sarah (Anthony) Arciniega of Westville and Tracy (Todd) Berndt of Westville.  She is also survived by her sister Kathy Burns of Tennessee, brother Jerry Ryan of Ohio, and 4 grandchildren Cheyenne C. Berndt, Amber D. Arciniega, Alyssa L. Arciniega, and Anthony T. Arciniega.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings Madonna Robbins, Sharon Miller, Jeanine Butkiewicz, and Jack Ryan. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, January, 28, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Otis. IN. at 10:00 AM, with Father John Zemelko officiating.  Luncheon to immediately follow the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Independent Cat Society of Westville, IN.
